     You who bring good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid;

say to the towns of Judah, “Here is your God!” See, the Sovereign Lord comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him. He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. Isa. 40:9-11 (NIV)

Heavenly Father, on this first Sunday of Advent, we begin a fresh journey of focusing our hopes, igniting our longings, and waiting for the explosive joy of Christmas. During this season of anticipation, may the promises of Jesus’ coming(s) grab us and “grace” us, beginning today.

According to these words from Isaiah, the Messiah comes to “gather us up in his arms and carry us close to his heart.” To be tended as vulnerable lambs, to be held close to Jesus’ heart, and be gently led—what more could we possibly desire, Father? Many of us are in great need of Jesus’ kindness, compassion, and care.

Yet he who is now our Good Shepherd was first the Lamb of God. Jesus’ saving journey took him from eternity to the cradle to the cross to heaven again. Hallelujah, for the quintessential love, unparalleled mercy, irrepressible grace of the gospel.

And as Isaiah notes, Jesus also comes as the Sovereign Lord, with “sleeves rolled up.” He will reign over history and defeat evil, redeem his bride and make all things new. 2018 has fueled our cravings for Jesus’ kingdom to come more fully and sooner. Thankfully, nothing will alter, subvert, or delay every good thing you have promised to accomplish through Jesus.

Over the next several weeks, restore our awe of Jesus as Immanuel—God with us and totally for us. During Advent, put us face down in adoring love, and on our feet for neighbor love. So very Amen we pray, with great anticipation, in Jesus’ matchless and merciful name.
