Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and uphold it with justice and righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. Isa. 9:7

Dear Lord Jesus, there are few Advent promises that bring me more hope than this one. Indeed, your sovereignty is my sanity; your present and future reign, are my centering peace and compelling delight; your Kingship is my anchor in storylines of confusion, messiness and fear.

You’re not “my Co-pilot,” you’re the King of all kings—the “the ruler of kings on earth,” and everything else (Rev. 1:5). The last thing I need in life, or in death, is a co-pilot; co-crucifixion (Gal. 2:20) and co-resurrection (Col. 3:1) with you, yes—co-pilot, No.

In this season of Advent, I’m glad, once again to affirm that there’s only one government and one peace sufficient to meet the needs of my sinful hearts and the issues in this broken world. You are the King of which David, at his best, was just a hint and hope. Having conquered death and the devil, you now reign from a throne of grace—advancing your kingdom of peace, justice, and righteousness in the hearts of your people, among the nations of the world, and in every sphere of your creation.

Lord Jesus, with zeal and grace you’re working all things together after the counsel of your will. You are the Lamb of God (Jn. 1:29)—who has taken away our sin, my sin; the Lord of Lords (Rev. 19:16)—alone worthy of our adoration, affection and allegiance; the Lamp of the New Jerusalem (Rev. 21:23)—who has overcome the darkness and whose glory will illuminate the landscape of the new heaven and new earth forever.

Not a hair can fall from my head, or a sparrow from the sky, apart from your sovereign will; not a day or breath can be taken from my lifespan apart from your say-so; every president, prime minister, potentate and political wannabe is, ultimately, under your redemptive thumb. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

As the gospel of your kingdom continues its transforming work in my life, Lord Jesus, may it advance through my life, wherever you send and place me. As you love me passionately, I would love you missionally—serving in your redeeming story, to your matchless glory, with your unspeakable joy. So very Amen I pray, in your mighty and merciful name.
