“The Lord’s hand isn’t too short to save, and his ear isn’t too dull to hear” (pp Isa. 59:1). Indeed, “you, Lord God, stretched out your arm and made the heavens and earth by your great power. Nothing is daunting or undoable for you” (pp Jer.32:17). So “don’t call everything a conspiracy, like they do; don’t live in dread, fear, and vex about the stuff that frightens them” (pp Isa .8:12). “Be still and know that I am God”—and you and they are not (Ps.46:10).
Heavenly Father, as this weekend begins, we come to you as hungry puppies—grateful for your loving heart, attentive ear, outstretched arm, and perfect timetable. Our greatest challenges, and most “impossible” situations, are no match for your mercy and might, plan and providence.
You still set up and sit-down premiers, princes, and presidents at your bidding (Dan.2:21). You still can make arrogant kings grow feathers for hair and make them eat grass and their pride (Nebuchadnezzar in Dan.4:33). You grieve when we trust in mere men and princes of our choosing (Ps.146:3). For you have installed Jesus as our King and the King of the cosmos. Abba, you laugh at impotent potentates and sovereigns who aren’t even sovereign over their next breath (Psalm 2). Hallelujah, and thank you.
Replace our fretting with faith, our tantrums with trust, and our worries with worship. Forgive us for our mis-placed trust—for preferring a King Saul or even a King David over King Jesus. Forgive us for blurring the line between any nation and your Kingdom. Forgive us for making everything about us and ours and making so little about Jesus and his glory. May the Day soon come when every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is singularly, spectacularly, always-has-been, and always-will-be Lord (Phil.2 5-11). So Very Amen.
