“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, constant in prayer.” Rom. 12:12
Lord Jesus, there’s so much “3-magnificence” filling the Bible—threes, triples, and triads of glory, grace, and goodness. Beginning with you, Abba, and the Holy Spirit—our glorious Triune God—the source and fountain of life, truth, goodness, and beauty. Then there’s the three offices you perfectly fulfill on our behalf, Jesus, as Prophet, Priest, and King. Hallelujah, and thank you. Our past, present, and future are each in your heart and hands.
Then we think of (and rejoice in) Paul’s “faith, hope, and love” (ICor.13:13), Jude’s “called, loved, and kept” (Jude 1:1), and John’s “grace, mercy, and peace” 2Jn.1:3)—each highlighting the riches of grace that we are given in you. How do we “spend” these riches of grace in life? Paul gives us another trio that answers this question. Free us to live and love this way until you return, Lord Jesus.
Be Joyful in Hope: Jesus, thank you for giving us hope, not hype. If we could smell the grass of the new heaven and new earth, and catch a glimpse of the “perfect everything” we’ll enjoy forever, our joy would be great, our fears would shrink, and our servanthood would be supersized.
Be Patient in Affliction: Since everything broken, sinful, and evil has an expiration date, patience isn’t a risk but our calling. You’re working in all things for our good, working all things together according to your plan, and nothing can separate us from your love. So rather than seeking to escape affliction, we can serve you well right in the middle of our afflictions, and those of others.
Be Constant in Prayer: Jesus, we can pray without ceasing because you love us without wavering, rule over all things without exception, and intercede for us without stopping. To pray is to join you, Jesus, in your commitment to make all things new, redeem your Bride, and fill the earth with your glory. Hallelujah, what a calling and hope! So Very Amen.
