The Apostle Paul: “One thing I do…” Phil. 3:13
King David: “One thing have I desired of the LORD…” Ps. 27:4
Jesus: “Only one thing is necessary, and Mary chose it.” Luke 10:42
Lord Jesus, busyness and “clutter” are like crabgrass, poison ivy, and dandelions. Left unattended, they keep growing and never result in anything good. Once a treasure, now a space-taking, dust-catching bother. Once driven to have enough and be enough, now too tired to stay focused, or even be with friends. Closets and schedules are one thing, but our hearts are an altogether different matter.
The older we get, the less heart-space we have. In our most Gospel-sane moments, none of us really craves “more-ness”—except more of you. Help us declutter and recenter on you, Jesus. Like Paul, we want to live more heavenward. Like David, want to see and savor more of your beauty. Like Mary, we want rich communion with you to be our new currency of choice.
Do a fresh work in our hearts, Jesus, one that will lead us to say with childlike wonder and singular joy, “I consider all things rubbish compared to the surpassing excellency of knowing Jesus” (Phil. 3:7-10). “Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth.” (Psalm 73:25)
May our schedules, choices, and attitudes demonstrate that our desire is for you and our delight is in you. Jesus, we will never regret loving you more and other stuff less. So Very Amen.
