“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.( Psalm 56:3)  “Some trust in chariots or horses, piles of cash or portfolios, bulging biceps or educated brain cells, mere people and Google searches. But we trust in  the name of the Lord our God—that is, in everything our God is, has promised, and has done for us in Jesus.” (pp Psalm 20:7)

Heavenly Father, we trust a chair will support us when we sit down, that a bridge won’t collapse when we drive across it, that the food we bring home from the market is botulism and E.coli free. We’re not naïve. We live in a broken world in which everything has been impacted by the Fall—including ourselves. Nothing is the way it’s supposed to be and will be only when Jesus returns. So, this complicates life and makes trusting you essential. Not trusting is impossible. Right trusting is a Gospel-issue.
In our fears and vulnerability, with our pain and lack of control, we want to trust you more than ever, Father. Where else can we go? If we only trust in ourselves, we are foolish. For our pain and impatience often dictate a course contrary to your heart. If we only trust in people, they are sure to disappoint us—for even the most trustworthy people aren’t sovereign and all knowing.
But because of what you have done for us in Jesus—we reaffirm our trust in you, Abba. You gave Jesus to us, you gave Jesus for us, and you gave us to Jesus. Surely, we can trust you to do all things well—even when you don’t do all things within our “comfort zone,” on our timetable, with an immediate outcome we can celebrate.
So, in our messiest relationships and the things we can’t control, in the transitions we didn’t see coming and the diagnoses we don’t like, with our newest hurts and oldest wounds—we declare: Our God is good all the time; all the time our God is good. So Very Amen.
