A few days back we hosted “Open Mic for Women” on the issue of shepherding women in the church.  The comment thread was very thoughtful, instructive, and practically helpful.  I’d encourage everyone to take a look and benefit.

I’ve been mulling over the feedback that’s been given.  And one thing is immediately clear: Our sisters have a lot of insight and a lot of passion for growing in the Lord.  I think we knew that already, but it seems we understimate how strong the the passion to grow and serve is and how much benefit we might derive with a little skillful listening.

To whet your appetite, I’ve pasted a couple comments below.  Have a gander at these and the others in the original post and leave some thoughts of your own.

Molly’s longing:

In my life I have longed for the instruction of elderly women in my churches. I believe there is a huge loss where this doesn’t happen and the Word is not honored (Titus 2:3-5). I don’t know how, as a shepherd, this would be accomplished/supervised, but I know that in my generation it has caused many women to think it is perfectly fine to be selfish wives and mothers. This teaching is not only left to you but also to the women who have many years of experience to teach us. We need that teaching in our homes over coffee or in the playground with our kids. “Me time” is more important than many other things. I am pretty sure my grandmother never thought about using that term when her children were young. I guess my point is that, as a shepherd, I think it is your responsibility to make sure the wise, older women of congregation realize the magnitude of their role.

Jenna’s questions for pastors to ask their wives:

The #1 thing a pastor can do to pastor women better is to: Cultivate his relationship with his wife and strive to know her better.

Well, for starters I think pastors should regularly asked their wives these questions and then make appropriate changes in their lives.
1. On a scale of 1-10 how “on board” do you feel in regards to our ministry?
2. What has God been showing you in regards to the direction of our ministry, family and marriage?
3. What do you perceive to be my biggest character flaw and how can I improve it?
4. Do you feel comfortable with the amount of accountability that I have in my life and with the support network that we have?
5. What skills, gifts and abilities do you feel that God would have you contribute to the ministry? And are any of these being overlooked?
6. If there was one thing that I could do right now to improve our marriage or to bless your day what would it be?

Amen and amen!  Keep sharing sisters!
