| The TGC Book Awards is our annual tradition of honoring the best new releases in Christian publishing, and last week we announced the 2023 winners. We evaluate publisher-nominated books in 12 categories, and four finalists in each category are assessed by a panel of expert judges. I oversee the Ministry category and served as one of the judges, alongside Four Oaks Community Church (Florida) lead pastor Paul Gilbert, The Orchard Church Arlington Heights (Illinois) campus pastor Brad Wetherell, and Midwestern Seminary assistant professor of pastoral ministry Jared C. Wilson. The four of us read the finalist books in our category and voted on our top two picks. The vote was tight, but I’m incredibly pleased with the winners we selected. The winning book in the Ministry category is Paul Miller’s A Praying Church: Becoming a People of Hope in a Discouraging World (Crossway), a timely wake-up call for church leaders plagued by discouragement, cynicism, and unbelief. Miller paints a beautiful portrait of what can happen when the people of God meet the Spirit of Christ on their knees. His book has theological depth but also provides practical counsel for pastors who want to cultivate times of corporate prayer where the saints commune with both God and one another. Our award of distinction went to Jeremy Writebol’s Pastor, Jesus Is Enough, which I’m convinced will be an evergreen work of shepherding through writing. Using Jesus’s letters to the churches in Revelation 2–3, Writebol speaks to the tide of evangelicalism that has shifted once again away from interest in the gospel’s sufficiency. He powerfully urges repentance, return, and recommitment to the good news at the heart of pastoral ministry. I highly recommend these two books and many of the other winners. Happy reading! |
