| Atheists can only argue against God because they are made in his image. As Thaddeus Williams explains in “9 Proofs You’re More Than Matter,” human consciousness is not a logical entailment of a materialistic universe. In fact, he contends, today you will do at least nine things that suggest you’re more than a product of mindless matter. How could genetic mutations in the physical world produce something nonphysical like an abstract thought? There’s no obvious answer. Further, is it reasonable to assume that nonmaterial realities such as “ought-ness” would spring from the soil of material “is-ness”—what should be from what simply is? Again, no. Many faith leaps are required to believe that humans are merely physical, that “the way things are”—the material world’s unconscious is-ness—somehow spawned - this-or-that-ness (choice-making power),
- ought-ness (moral values),
- therefore-ness (logical laws),
- what-ness (semantics),
- about-ness (intentionality),
- awe-ness (creativity),
- I-ness (indexicality),
- what-it’s-like-ness (qualia),
- for-ness (teleology), and
- why-ness (significance).
Our universe is enchanted, suffused with grandeur because it is the craftsmanship of a beautifully rational God. So when it comes to our uniquely human capacity for self-awareness and analysis, which is the likelier source: unthinking matter or a thinking Maker? Thaddeus Williams is one of many speakers taking part in the new microevent format at TGC23, our national conference this September. Find out more and register today to get the best price available. |
