The Gospel Coalition has been around for 20 years. And for all of those 20 years, I have been a local church pastor. Like thousands of pastors around the world, I’ve found TGC to be an invaluable resource over the years. When I have struggled with a particular topic or biblical passage, or when I needed insight on how the gospel connects to a certain subject matter, TGC has been one of the first places I go. What does TGC have to say about ____? Whenever you Google “TGC + [whatever subject or question you need help on],” helpful results tend to surface. That’s why TGC is important. Pastoral ministry is hard. Faithful Christian living is hard. We need help.

TGC has been there to help. And by God’s grace TGC will continue to be there for decades to come.

In 2011 I had the chance to take my twin boys—Hayden and Joseph—to a meal at Red Robin with none other than TGC co-founder Don Carson, who was in town for our church’s THINK conference. The boys each got to ask Don a question. “How does God’s sovereignty not make us robots?” Joseph asked. “Why does it seem God allows some people in the Bible to lie, even while blessing them?” Hayden asked. Don engaged their questions carefully and provided thoughtful answers. Now, not everyone gets to ask Don Carson theological questions over burgers! But what TGC does, every day, is similar. We strive to provide thoughtful, biblical answers to questions people are asking. We engage. We want to be like Don at Red Robin: leaning in to listen to the next generation, providing wisdom to help them wrestle through challenges and grow in faithfulness.

I’m so grateful God gave Don Carson and Tim Keller the vision to establish TGC back in 2005. The growth and global impact of TGC’s ministry shows that when you get the gospel right and you get relationships right, amazing things happen. A healthy gospel movement needs both doctrinal clarity and relational unity—a love for the gospel and a love for one another. That’s been the heartbeat of TGC for 20 years: locking arms and teaming up to strengthen churches in gospel-centered ministry. As I humbly step into the role of TGC president, I will do my best to make sure TGC stays the course in our desire to renew and unify the contemporary church in the ancient gospel.
