I’m not proud of how much TV I’ve watched since this pandemic started, but I don’t regret the time I’ve spent watching HGTV’s Fixer Upper. It’s especially satisfying in these days—when everything seems to be falling apart—to watch Chip and Joanna Gaines take a house from dilapidated to beautiful in less than an hour.

Rebekah Hannah is attempting her own fixer upper. In her article “How Home Renovations Point to Heart Renovations” she writes, “I’m constantly finding parallels between my broken house and my sinful heart.” When you pull up old carpet and cut into walls that have stood for years, you are likely to find scary things. Likewise, Hannah writes, “when the Spirit of God starts digging around and ripping things out, we discover the long-dead varmints hiding inside the walls of our hearts.”

Has God been doing a renovation on your heart in 2020? If the disruption of life has revealed idols or sinful attitudes, take heart! God doesn’t stop after demo day. Renovations take longer (and cost more) in real life, but beauty awaits at the end of them.
