| With only 55 days left until Election Day in the U.S., many of our neighbors are hard-pressed to think of anything more monumental than who will occupy the White House on January 20. From the near assassination of a former president to the withdrawal of the race from the incumbent, this election has been full of events destined for the history books. I don’t know how the presidential debate will unfold tonight or what “October surprise” might lurk around the corner, but I do know my heart is often pulled toward cynicism, despair, or overconfidence. Yet, whatever the future holds, we can be assured that God’s rule is not up for grabs, and his reign is not subject to any ballot. In his article for TGC, Kevin Halloran shares his “weapon of choice” to combat political anxiety: Psalm 2. “When I meditate on Psalm 2,” he writes, “my perspective zooms out from the current turmoil of the world to see the true eternal drama unfolding. As I see who truly reigns over history, my anxiety turns to worship.” By turning to God’s Word instead of relying on headlines, pollsters, or social media feeds, we can gain the right perspective on what truly matters and remain focused on God’s mission. Tonight, I’ll watch the presidential debate. I’ll head to the voting booth on November 5. But through it all, I’ll pray my heart will be anchored in the truths of Psalm 2 as I seek to engage the political sphere with wisdom—as a faithful citizen of the city of man, yet placing my ultimate hope in the city of God. |
