Barely a day goes by that I don’t have a conversation about AI.

At TGC, my coworkers and I regularly discuss AI as it relates to editing. We might like to eradicate grammar errors, but we don’t want to eradicate the value of human-crafted words.

At home, I have conversations with my teenage children about the ways AI is helping them understand complex math concepts but also blurring the line between honest work and cheating.

Although it’s a recent technology, AI has already infiltrated vast swaths of our lives. It drafts your work emails and, if the commercials are to be believed, can also plan your next vacation better than you could. Where can you go that AI is not already there?

As a result, nearly everyone in my life wants to know: Should I use AI for [fill in the blank]?

In her recent article, Bethany Broderick offers a helpful framework of three questions to evaluate AI use:

  • Am I using AI to push past my God-given limits?
  • Am I using AI to replace wisdom gained from in-person relationships?
  • Am I using AI to neglect the work God has entrusted to me?

The answers to those questions will vary by person and circumstance, but thoughtfully wrestling with them will give you much more than a red or green light for AI use. What I appreciate about Broderick’s framework is the way it requires me to consider my mixed motivations and the lurking temptations that would pull me away from reality, relationships, and responsibilities.

If, in the end, AI’s offer turns out to be a Faustian bargain—its perfection and efficiency in exchange for my humanity—I’ll pass, thanks.
