In our tribalized social-media age, the loudest and most extreme voices are the ones that tend to get a hearing. But I’m thankful for the careful and thoughtful voices that speak with wisdom to some of the most contentious issues in the church and broader culture. With books like White Fragility and How to Be an Antiracist topping bestseller lists, it’s clear people are seeking answers to longstanding (and painful) questions about race in America.

George Yancey is a sociologist and professor of sociology at Baylor University, and he’s written a review of Robin DiAngelo’s White Fragility. As he argues, “Research seems to indicate that taking the route of DiAngelo is not lessening our racial hostility—but it may be making that hostility worse.” I encourage you to read this thoughtful review that is at once critical and yet advances the conversation. Honest Christians will come to different conclusions in many of these layered conversations, but I’m thankful for those who engage, reason, and seek to persuade rather than merely lobbing hand grenades to the other side.
