I attended a Christian college as an undergraduate (Wheaton) and worked for a Christian university for nine years (Biola). I love Christian higher education and believe in its importance. Indeed, at a time when the culture pulls more and more Christian young people off their (often shallow) faith foundations with hurricane-strength power, biblically grounded Christian education can offer a powerful counter-formational force.

But Christian higher education is in crisis, for all the reasons highlighted in Sarah Zylstra’s stellar article, featured below. The findings of her research should concern all of us. These Christ-centered knowledge institutions—to the extent that they remain unflinchingly Christ-centered in the face of countless pressures—preserve and promote Christian wisdom in a post-Christian age. We need them. We need to pray for them, fight for them, fund them, and encourage them toward the sort of brave, outside-the-box solutions needed to not only survive in the next century, but also to revive.
